Angel Island Adventure
You have probably already seen the most recent
year of pictures, and have found your way here via that link.
Welcome, and thank you for visiting my past!
As explained in the index for this section
of Bauleke.com, I am a seven-year survivor of an oligodendroglioma
with mixed anaplastic astrocytoma
(don't ask me to pronounce those words -- I never have liked them).
I had a craniotomy in August of 1994, and then was treated with a
protocol called CCNU, which consisted of three chemotherapy drugs
administered in various fashions, along with radiation therapy. I
haven't had a recurrence of the tumor in this whole seven years.
The therapy used on me was experimental - they were closing in on
the last stages of the study prior to making it the preferred treatment.
If I had been eligable for the study (which I wasn't, due to another
cancer that had been successfully treated with radiation therapy),
some of the chemotherapy would have been delivered by shunt during
my radiation therapy. That seemed like too much for me to do at once,
since I was also undergoing physical therapy to learn to walk again,
so I opted out of that part.
The Angel Island Adventure has become a part of my life. It seems
like the best way to fight back against this disease - by raising
funds to go toward research on brain tumors.
Here are some photos from previous years of the Angel Island Adventure.
